I must say that I agree with you about communication and how difficult it can be to assist patients when the system has become so fraught with road blocks. As a California licensed RN I have never read this part of the Nursing Regulations that prohibit sharing of patient information with an informed consent (HIPPA) in hand.
As nurses we have to deal with this a lot and it feels to me that this blocking of communication and information is more about people fearing retribution or some imagined negtive consequence rather then the effect it has on patient outcomes.
I enjoy your blog.

Betty,
I am a nurse, currently in the ICU and in cardiac rehab. I love this story and feel that it is an issue in the ever increasing acuity of patients as well as the increasing workload of the nurses at the bedside. I feel that it is imperative nurses step back from the "ever-mounting" charting, alarms, Dr.'s asking questions (which, by the way are written in the charts right in frount of them) and view the patient as an actual human being. Getting back to the roots of "nursing" and providing the patient with the basics such as Comfort, Cleanliness and Compassion are the fundamentals of nursing. I feel that a back rub with a turn, pillows for comfort and compassionate listening can make a stressfull hospitalization for at least that moment, somewhat tolerable. To know that you, the nurse, can do this with a two minute back rub, truely makes it worth it.
I do have to blam the crazy insurance companies for making nursing into a profession where we feel that sometimes it is impossible to find the time to actually "care" for the patient. At somepoint in my nursing career I feel that the way nurses care for their patients is going to have to change. Hospital systems are going to have to find a way to care for many more patients with less nurses to/who care.
I just wanted to say that what you are doing is a great transition for nurses in this brand new era of nursing. Kudos to you!
